June 20, 1928 – April 17, 2013 A Celebration of Life honoring Harry Elk will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 20th at the Northside Church of Christ in Bonham, Texas. Bob Coburn of Harrisburg, Illinois will conduct the service. Interment will follow at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy.
Harry went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 17th. He passed away at the Clyde W. Cosper Veterans Center in Bonham following a brief illness. He was born on June 20, 1928 to Robert Charlie Elk and Ina Lucille Blakey Elk at their home north of Savoy. Harry was always a hard worker during his youth, working on the family farm and later holding a full time job at the Katy Railroad at the age of 16. He attended and graduated from Savoy High School in 1946.
In 1950 he was drafted into the United States Army and trained at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Following his training, he made a 30 day voyage on a transport ship to Japan and from there to the battlefields of Korea, until being honorably discharged in 1952.
After returning home, he married Ila Feagans on June 13, 1953.
He began a long and successful career with the Texas Department of Transportaion in 1952. He worked in the Engineering Department helping to construct area roads and highways. Harry retired from TXDOT after 40 years of dedicated and meritorious service.
Harry was a life-long Fannin County resident whose interests included gardening, raising Polled Hereford cattle and going to early morning coffee with his buddies. He also loved spending time with family and friends and was very proud of his six grandchildren.
Harry was very active in his community. He was a Christian man and served many years as an Elder for the Savoy Church of Christ. He was President of the Whiteshed Water Corporation and served on their board for 22 years. He also served on the Sunnyside Cemetery Board in Savoy and was a member of the Texas Public Employees Association. He was an active supporter of Bonham FFA and 4-H, and enjoyed many years of watching his boys show cattle.
He is survived by his wife, Ila Elk of the home; sons, Daryl Elk and wife Rebecca of Bonham, TX, Charles Elk and wife Cindy of Sachse, TX, Steve Elk and wife Teri of Savoy, TX.; Grandsons, Dustin Elk and wife Lyla, Collin Elk, Jared Elk and Derek Elk; Granddaughters, Carissa Elk, Mitzi Jones and husband Cody; Brother, Benny Elk and wife Louise; Sister, Lucille Kumler and husband Morris Salerno; sister-in-law Anita Elk and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant son Larry Elk; Sister Edna Earle Panter; Brothers, Robert Elk Jr. “Bobby”, Burney Elk “Red”, and Jimmy Elk.
Pallbearers will be Grandchildren, Dustin Elk, Cody Jones, Collin Elk, Carissa Elk, Jared Elk and Derek Elk
Family visitation will be Friday, April 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mullican-Little Funeral Home in Bells/Savoy, who is also in charge of funeral arrangements.
