John “Norman” Phillips passed away January 6, 2021 at Stonebrook Assisted Living in Denison, Texas. He was born in Wingate, Texas on October 16, 1922. He was the oldest son of John and Ruby Phillips.

Norman and his six siblings grew up in Runnels County. He was very athletic and participated in football, baseball, track, and tennis. During his senior year, his family moved to Bledsoe, Texas, where he graduated third in his class.

After graduation, he farmed with his father, until he enlisted in the Army in November of 1942. He proudly served his country, where he was wounded on July 16, 1943 in New Georgia in the South Pacific, for which he received a Purple Heart. He spent a year recovering at O’Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, where he met Goldia Conner and they began their 64-year marriage in July of 1944.

Norman was a dedicated family man. A quiet but strong man who was a hard worker, good provider, and loving husband and father.

Norman is survived by his baby sister, Ramona Peck of Longview, Texas; son, Tommy Phillips and wife Amanda; daughters, Janis Smith, Peggy Kendrick and husband Bryan; eight grandchildren and respective spouses; 12 great- grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and numerous extended family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Goldia Phillips; parents, John and Ruby; siblings, Lillian Imogene Phillips, his twin Noma Edgin, Barron Phillips, L.C. Phillips, Ruth Gandy, and Weldon Phillips; son-in-law, Dwight Smith.

Graveside services will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bells, Texas on Saturday January 9, 2021 at 1:00pm. Due to Covid-19, masks will be required at the graveside service. Social distancing is requested.
