August 6, 1963 –  March 21, 2014 Alan was born in Grand Prairie, Texas and spent his childhood years in Savoy, Texas with his mother, Theresa, father, Les, and two brothers, Leslie and Gary. Alan cherished growing up in a small Texas town where everyone knew and took care of each other. No matter where Alan’s life would take him, he was know as a proud Texan, always considered Texas home, and was a devoted Dallas Cowboys fan.
Alan’s dream was to serve his country, and that’s what drew him into law enforcement. He graduated from Sam Houston State University in May 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He was employed by the Dallas Police Department from 1988 to 1996, serving five of those years in the narcotics division. There, he met, Jeff Haywood and Kevin Willis, his two best friends, and boy, can they ever tell you some funny Alan stories.

He graduated from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) academy in 1996 and was assigned to the San Francisco Field Division (FD). It was in San Francisco that he met Lori, the love of his life, and their adventure began. In the 17 years that Alan served with the DEA, they relocated often (from Dallas to Sacramento, then to Headquarters in Virginia, and most recently, back to Sacramento). In his latest post, Alan was proud to be serving as Special Agent in Charge of the Sacramento District Office. He supervised and directed the activities of over 110 core and support employees. As a stand alone ASAC, he was responsible for leading DEA operations in 34 of California’s 58 counties. In every position he was promoted to, Alan took it very seriously, but he also knew how to put people at ease with his laugh and his infectious smile. Being that he started off as an agent, he knew what it was like to be at every level, and as such, he was able to connect with employees at every level.

Alan’s greatest joy and his proudest accomplishment was his family. His children Shannon and Matthew were the lights of his life. Alan loved and protected Shannon fiercely. He taught her how to drive because she wanted his calm and encouraging influence. If there was football on TV, it was Alan and Shannon together taking it in on a Sunday afternoon. He and Shannon also shared a love of volleyball, a sport that Alan played throughout his life, enjoying a competitive game just two weeks ago. Lori said, “He had a huge smile on his face when he came home that day and told me it was the best game he had every played.” Matthew idolized his dad; he loved hearing about his dad’s adventures in the Dallas Police Department and the DEA. Matt’s favorite thing to do was to spend time with his dad, whether it was fishing or playing ball or just sitting on the couch watching their favorite cop shows together. They had a very special bond. Lori said, “Even though we had him for such a short time, his presence in our lives will be felt forever. He built such a solid foundation for our children, and we are so proud of him and of all he accomplished. He did more in his 49 years than most people will ever do in an entire lifetime.”
