Gene Thurman went peacefully home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning early February 24, 2022 after a lengthy illness.

Gene was born in Pecan Gap, Texas on September 17, 1939. His parents were Raymond and Ollie Mae Thurman of the Dial community, south-east of Honey Grove, Texas. He later attended school in Honey Grove where he was a graduate of the class of 1959. While there he participated in sports and was selected most athletic and most handsome. He was always a gentleman and a man of integrity.

Gene was married to his high school sweetheart Helen Pierce on June 24, 1960. He served in the Army at Fort Polk, Louisiana from 1961to 1962. In high school and his early years of being married, Gene worked at Collins Piggly Wiggly Grocery Store in Honey Grove. Then he was employed by General Cable Corp. for 40 years, having retired in 2002.

His first priority in life was very clear, his devotion to his Lord Jesus Christ. He was a deacon and member of the First Baptist Church Savoy, having been ordained at the age of 29 years. Gene loved his church family and he had many friends that he cared for deeply. He was always especially happy to be with his three daughters and five grandchildren. There are eight great-grands and one more soon to be here in June.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Thurman; his daughters, Connie Hughes of Whitewright, Angela Barron and husband Ronnie of Gunter, Kelly Davis and husband Mitch of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Daniel and Tara Barron of Red Wood City, California, Chris Hughes and wife Hailey of Mount Vernon, Emily Morrow and husband Austin of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Holly Brown and husband Duston of Whitewright and Preston Davis of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great-grands, Emory and Ellie Brown, Charley and Callan Hughes, and baby brother “on the way”, Vivian and identical twins Alice and Lila Morrow, and Everett Barron, along with several nieces and nephews; brothers, George Thurman and Charles Thurman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Ollie Mae; son in law, Eddy Hughes; sisters, Dorothy Houston, Juanita Wall, Pauline Pecena, Jo Wheless, and Annell Ball, and Sue Wishard; brothers, Royce Thurman, Robert Thurman, Bill Thurman, Mack Thurman, and Johnny Thurman; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held Sunday, February 27, 2022 at the First Baptist Church Savoy at 2:00 PM with the visitation one hour prior. Memorials may be made FBC, Savoy or the Alzheimer’s Association.

Appropriate Covid precautions will be observed at the service. FBC Deacons will be pallbearers and Rev. James Seigler, Rev. Bill Sessom and Rev. Chris Merritt will be speakers. Interment will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery in Savoy.
