September 26, 1935 –  April 24, 2017 Funeral services for Shirley Ann Owens, 81, are set for 1:00 pm, Friday, April 28, 2017 at Mullican-Little Chapel with Rev. Lowell Howard officiating and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Bells. Those serving as pallbearers are Dakota Clifton, Joey Gilmore, Bill Davis, Charlie Harris, Allen Pierce and Blake Pierce. Shirley was born September 25, 1935 in San Angelo, Texas to George Davis and Goldie (Edwards) Davis. She married Elmo J. McDougal in October 1954 and after his death, she married Lawson Vernon Owens. She was a Sales Clerk at Montgomery Ward for over 20 years, and a member of Choctaw Creek Cowboy church in Savoy. She was a believer in the Lord and was at church every Sunday unless she was sick or the weather was too bad for her to attend. Shirley looked forward to playing Canasta with friends and family and the fellowship they shared. She gained joy in the simple things of life like riding horses, watching her Dallas Cowboys, going out to eat and to church, getting her hair styled at Cathy’s every Thursday in Bells. Thursdays were fun for Shirley and her daughter, Debbie. Debbie would take Shirley to get her hair styled then would eat at Hucks or La Mesa and run errands. They went so often that the wait staff at La Mesa would tell them their table was ready and they remembered just what Shirley wanted for lunch. Debbie says that her mom was her best friend and could always count on her.

Dakota Alan Clifton was the delight of his grandmother’s life. She was his number one cheerleader as well as his teammates, so much so that they all referred to her as Grandma, but to Dakota she was his Nana. When Dakota was first learning to play tennis, Nana would be on the opposite side of the court, racket in hand. Dakota said she looked like a ballerina doing her moves. They had lots of laughs. She supported him in band, one act play, choir and in whatever ball sport he was involved. April 2014 was a highlight for her when Dakota and Rylee were married. Nana was right there giving orders, smiling from ear to ear; it was a very happy day.

Daughter, Debbie Clifton of Bells; grandson, Dakota Clifton and wife Rylee of Plano; nieces, Linda Pierce and husband Allen of Bells, Sharon Owens of Bells; numerous nieces and nephews all survive Shirley. She was preceded by parents; two husbands, Elmo J. McDougal and L.V. Owens; son, Billy Frank McDougal; brothers, Hal and Vernon Davis; and son-in-law, Rick Clifton.
