Royce Hubert Sweet passed away peacefully in Sherman, Texas on Sunday, April 11, 2021 at the age of 86. Royce was born to Hubert and Susie (Grant) Sweet on June 17, 1934 in Bells, Texas.
Royce dedicated his entire life to God and family. He was a life long member of the Church of Christ. He served as a Deacon in the Church of Christ in Andrews, Texas and Keller, Texas. Royce was also an Elder in the Church of Christ in Savoy, Texas. He made two trips to Central America to help spread the word of Christ.
He loved to help others, especially young people. He served others in many capacities during his life. He was a baseball coach, a Boy Scout leader, and a house parent at Christ Haven Orphan’s Home in Keller, Texas; along with his wife Julia Sweet to which he was a loving and dedicated husband for 65 years. Some of his last words were of his love for, and pride in his wife and their long happy marriage together. He was a kind, generous, and loving father, who loved to take his family to rodeos, movies, and other special events. As often as he could get away, he would pack up the family and go camping in the state and national parks across the nation. He was raised on a farm and loved the outdoors and rural lifestyle. He loved Christian, country and bluegrass music, and especially enjoyed the songs of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash. Royce loved to repair old radios. He rebuilt and repaired antique radios until the end of his life.
Royce greatly enjoyed and spent most of his professional life working with electronics. He traveled to Chicago, Illinois at the age of 17 to receive formal training in electronics and eventually became a civilian employee of the U.S. Air Force. In 1956, he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he “did the same thing he was doing for the Air Force but for less money.” After being honorably discharged for the Army he worked again for the Air Force and later was hired by the Federal Aviation Administration as a radar specialist. He owned several television and radio repair businesses during his life. He retired from the FAA in 1989.
Royce was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Susie Sweet; his sister, Kawatha Baecht; grandparents, Floyd and Lillie Sweet; and Alvirs and Elsie Grant. He is survived by his wife, Julia Sweet of Savoy, Texas; his children, Michael Sweet and daughter-in-law Lupe Sweet of Houston, Texas; Jeff Sweet and daughter-in-law Stephanie Sweet of Savoy, Texas; Naomi Bonney and son-in-law Jerry Bonney of Fate, Texas; his grandchildren, Joshua Bonney, Mark Bonney, Stephanie Martin, Emily Sweet, Jeremy Sweet, Ashley Sweet, and Cindy Sweet. Royce, Even though you told me the same stories over and over and I would roll my eyes, I will miss those stories so much! I am so glad that you were my brother. Glad we were neighbors for a while. As brother and sister we did not grow up together, we were raised in different times, so living next to each other I got to know you . Thank you for being my older brother, I know you are rejoicing now in heaven. Love you always. Anna
To the entire Sweet Family, I love you and know you will miss Royce. I think of the Reunion he is having with his parents that he is having. Most of all the Reunion with the Lord that he loved all his life. He will be missed here on earth, but know we will all see him again some day.
